Fresh raspberry, black cherry, and cinnamon spice aromas with soft, warm flavors of black cherry on the palate, balanced by good acidity. Those flavors, along with some earth tones, linger for a while; and the wine will age for another three to four years. This wine will go perfectly with roast duck with a fruit sauce or glazed pork tenderloin. It’s a wonderful example of a French wine from a small but ever-more important region.

Other Notes
I was excited to get the opportunity to taste a new label from Spelletich Family Wine Company. If you’re unfamiliar, this Napa Valley winery was created in 1994 by winemaker Barb Spelletich and produces 4 different labels. The labels include Spelletich Cellars, 3 Spells, Prix Fixe, and SPELLwine. All four labels were created to target a different audience, meaning that there really is something for every palate and price-range at Spelletich Family Wine Company. This bottle of 2011 Prix Fixe Diable Rouge is made from the Marselan grape, which was the first time I’ve tried this varietal. Marselan is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. This medium-bodied wine was fresh and fun with flavors of raspberry tart, pomegranate, cranberry, and cinnamon spice. I’m glad I saved some wine for the next day because it proved to show itself even better after some time to settle and open up. The 2011 Diable Rouge is a well crafted wine with nice balance that shows the beautiful harmony of a French wine with a little touch of California love.
