Vanessa Meyer—Logistics Manager

Barb Spelletich

“I was a Pope Valley kid,” says Vanessa, who grew up in the eastern hills of Napa Valley. But she wasn’t a “wine kid”. Even though she went to school in St. Helena with “winery kids”, Vanessa Meyers was not involved in the wine business. She is now.

The married mother of two daughters – Savanna, 13, and Cadence, 9 – has been since January 2012, the logistics manager for the Spelletich Family Wine Company. That means she’s involved with Internet sales, shipping, inventory, legal work, and bookkeeping. Oh, and as part of her work in the first wine industry job she’s held, Vanessa has immersed herself in bringing the grapes into the winery, taking sugar readings, as well as taking barrel samples. “I’m getting to dip into every part of it,” she says of the small, family run operation.

“I feel more involved, especially here because it’s more hands-on. It’s a small company and I’m getting to learn all aspects. I’m pretty proud of myself. I’m becoming more knowledgeable. Now, when I go to buy a bottle of wine, I’m more educated.”

On wine the industry in general, Vanessa is awed by “how much work it really is. It looks easy from the outside but I have a lot of respect for people in the industry. There are so many aspects that need taking care of on a daily basis. There’s something new to learn every day. I didn’t realize how many realms there are. It’s just not ‘crush the berries, put it into the barrels and all is good.’ This job has opened my eyes to what really goes on behind the scenes.”

As for SFWC she says, “They are evolving right now. Being fresh to the situation, I can see what they’re going toward; and they’re going forward. You can see the wheels turning.”

You can see Vanessa Meyers’ wheels spinning, too.
